The BTB25 for Abtey with different packaging styles
Updated: 17 July 2024
Abtey is a family business founded in 1946 by Amélie and Henry Abtey. The first production location was in Mulhouse and covered 20 m². Today the production site is still near Mulhouse and is run by Anne-Catherine, the granddaughter of Amélie and Henry. One of the aspects which has changed is the size of the production site, which over the years has expanded from 20 m² to 7,500 m².
Abtey has ordered a BTB25 from Lareka. The challenges: several different packaging styles and toppings. The toppings are one of the factors which distinguish Abtey in the chocolate market. For example, nuts, oats, marshmallows and even banana chips! Abtey consulted Lareka for ideas on how these toppings could best be presented ina new packaging style.
Together with Abtey, we designed a packaging style in which the toppings on the bars were visible to the customer. We managed to achieve this by using a transparent layer as the first layer of the packaging process and then wrapping it in a paper banderol.
To supply Abtey with the desired packaging without harming the environment, we chose a cellulose foil. This is a foil which has the same transparency and barrier properties of standard foil but without using plastic or other PE materials! The main advantage is that this foil is biodegradable and is even suitable for home composting.
To pack the bars to ensure that the toppings were visible, we literally had to look at things from a different angle! For example, Abtey’s BTB25 was calibrated so that the bars were inserted upside down. This means that the bar passes through the folding unit with the toppings facing up enabling us to achieve the desired packaging. Want to see what the packaging process looks like?
